Join Becky Kiddle, Director of Te Manawahoukura at Te Wānanga o Aotearoa, as she explores the connection between urban design and indigenous identity.

In the Imagining Decolonised Cities project with Ngāti Toa Rangatira, Becky and her team reimagine cities to better serve Māori communities by integrating Māori landmarks like maunga and awa into urban design and making Te Reo Māori visible in everyday settings. Becky shares examples of decolonisation in urban spaces, such as Wellington’s waterfront, highlighting how urban design can celebrate Māori identity. Bianca Elkington from Ngāti Toa shares her journey with rangatahi from Aotea College and Takapūwāhia, focusing on reconnecting young Māori with their roots. She reflects on how youth learned about colonisation and its impacts, and discusses the strength of communities like Takapūwāhia. Bianca also talks about developing an iwi education hub and the dream of a kura taiao, an environment-centered school on their whenua, emphasizing the importance of fostering a sense of belonging for future generations. This video is a compelling exploration of reimagining urban spaces to reflect and celebrate Māori identity, fostering a sense of belonging for future generations.
