Community Housing Provision: A Snapshot of Changing Opportunities

The community housing third sector has a long history of contributing to social rental housing and affordable homeownership in Aotearoa/New Zealand (NZ).

However, many community housing providers (CHPs) are struggling to do so in the current policy environment. In this report we begin by highlighting a recent successful example of CHP affordable housing provision (Waimahia Inlet), and then examine aspects of the policy environment, which, from the perspective of many CHPs, are making it difficult for them to help address New Zealand’s current housing crisis. This paper is a snapshot of CHP viewpoints in 2019.
