This chapter details a project to build a vertical papakāinga housing development by Ngāti Whātua Ōrākei (NWO).

This vertical papakāinga is a high rise, apartment style development, which is critical as NWO are located ten minutes from the Auckland CBD. The hapū’s long-term vision is to ensure its people enjoy a high level of physical, emotional, spiritual and mental wellbeing, and housing is a part of that strategy. As the authors note, the adjustment required living in a high rise rather than on the land is an important consideration, as is the tikanga and kawa involved when people are living above one’s head. The aim of the project this chapter covers is to help NWO to develop design guidelines and draft concept designs for this vertical papakāinga with a focus on innovative solutions that will support the cultural and wellbeing needs of NWO whānau. As the authors note, a critical component of the design concept is ensuring that the development is able to foster community, connect with the whenua, ensure sustainability, and innovative.
