The Condition of Owned and Rented Housing in Aotearoa New Zealand

Author Published Date Read Publication

Using a national housing assessment survey and information on housing tenure, this paper explores the distribution of a range of indicators of housing condition, comparing between owned and rented stock.

On average across Aotearoa New Zealand, rental dwellings are more likely to be in a poorer state of repair and experience higher rates of visible mould than owner-occupied dwellings. However, insulation levels did not differ significantly. This finding could be indicative of the requirements for insulation in rentals taking effect. Participation rates of different population subgroups in the survey will have affected these results.
