This study examines the relationship between housing tenure and health outcomes in older New Zealanders using data from the New Zealand Health Surveys.

Findings indicate a gradient in health based on housing tenure, with public renters reporting the poorest health outcomes, followed by private renters, and owner-occupiers reporting the best health. The analysis reveals that rental tenure is linked with economic disadvantage and poorer physical and mental health. The study underscores the public health implications of increasing older adult renters, highlighting the need for policy and services to address the care and support needs of this demographic, especially among Māori and Pacific people and older females.
