When Cultivate Thrives: Developing Criteria for Community Economy Return on Investment

Urban communities globally are employing farming and gardening to foster food security, social inclusion, and wellbeing.

In Christchurch, Cultivate views urban farms not just as physical spaces but also as a unique community economy. This approach involves using resources like vacant urban land and green waste to provide care for urban youth. The urban farms of Cultivate serve as spaces where supportive and therapeutic environments are created for youth interns, urban farmers, trained social workers, and volunteers. These urban farms represent innovative models of urban wellbeing initiatives that can be valuable for entities aiming to enhance youth wellbeing and social development in New Zealand and beyond. To understand and quantify the comprehensive impact of Cultivate, we collaborated with its stakeholders to refine an existing evaluation tool: the Community Economy Return on Investment (CEROI). The project concludes in November 2018 with workshops involving urban designers to promote the tool’s use in illustrating the non-financial return on investment for other urban wellbeing initiatives.
